A Hands-On Introduction to the Ancient World

This immersive unit began with four different hands-on activities designed to introduce the mysteries and wonders of ancient civilizations. Students rotated through four activities, each offering a glimpse into the past and building anticipation for the topics they would explore in the coming weeks.

“Sands of Time” – Uncovering Ancient Artifacts

In the first activity, called “Sands of Time,” students took on the role of archaeologists. Equipped with brushes and tools, they carefully dug through coloured sand to uncover hidden ancient artifacts, fostering an appreciation for the patience and precision required in real archaeological digs.

“The Dark Tomb” – Exploring Hidden Mysteries

The second activity, “The Dark Tomb,” introduced a sense of adventure. With flashlights in hand, students navigated through a mock dark tomb, moving through a tunnel and discovering images on the walls and ceiling. This activity gave them a feel for the thrill and mystery of exploring long-forgotten places.

“Puzzles of Broken Fragments” – Reconstructing History

In the third station, students worked with “puzzles of broken fragments,” piecing together pictures from ancient times. This activity challenged them to think critically and piece together clues, encouraging them to make guesses about what this new unit might entail.

“Taking a Peek” – Digital Exploration of the Past

The final activity, called “Taking a Peek,” used the digital tool Gynzy to spotlight fragments of historical images. These small glimpses gradually revealed larger scenes, stimulating curiosity and allowing students to start visualizing the ancient world they would soon learn about.

A Journey of Discovery Awaits

Each activity sparked curiosity and wonder, setting the stage for a unit filled with exploration, discovery, and excitement. The students eagerly embraced the start of Temples, Tombs, and Treasures, ready to dig deeper into the mysteries of ancient civilizations.

As the students embark on their journey through Temples, Tombs, and Treasures, the excitement of their hands-on discoveries will only deepen their connection to the ancient world. With each new activity, they will uncover more about the fascinating civilizations that shaped history. This unit promises to be a thrilling adventure of learning and exploration, and we can’t wait to see where their curiosity takes them next!
