Primary School EAL Teaching Assistant

Are you looking to help children whose first language is not English? Are you familiar with a number of cultures and backgrounds? Do you hold experience in assisting pupils with EAL and additional language skills?

As a start-up international school, we are currently recruiting for teacher assistants EAL. Your role will consist of leading EAL intervention where you will work with a small group of pupils across all year groups to support them with their English language. Using your knowledge of Phonics will help to improve the children's levels of reading, writing and speaking of the English language. On certain moments you will be supporting as a teaching assistant in groups 1-7. If you are an international educator and you are a creative and passionate teacher, we would like to meet you.

About Optimist International School

Optimist International School is a new primary school in Hoofddorp, Haarlemmermeer. It opened its doors the 8th of January 2018. The international school is an integrated part of De Optimist, a Dutch Primary School with approximately 300 students. Within De Optimist we strive for integration between the International School (IS) and the Dutch School (NS). We bring our students together and share activities where possible and work separately where needed. The school is subsidised by the Dutch government, which enables us to deliver high quality education at competitive fees. Optimist International School is a school for international education and is a member of the Dutch International Schools. De school focuses on children from international backgrounds. The school offers primary education to students aged 4 – 10. The language of instruction for classes is English.

To be successful for this role you will need the following skills and experiences:

  • Qualified Teaching Assistant Status for primary education
  • Fluent in English (C2 level)
  • At least 2 years experience with EAL students previously
  • Encourage a safe, approachable and welcoming place of learning
  • Good knowledge of EAL and the Phonics curriculum and preferably the International Primary Curriculum
  • Excellent knowledge and experience of different teaching and educational methodologies
  • Be able to make an individual learning and support plan and drive targets and pupil progress in a passionate manner
  • Be able to implement learning strategies that you feel will really make a difference
  • Be able to plan EAL lessons in line with the group curriculum
  • Be able to cope with mixed language levels and have the ability to differentiate and to challenge each pupil to the best of their abilities
  • Monitor progress and developments
  • Communicate with staff, parents and other agencies regarding developments
  • Be comfortable across all primary year groups
  • Experience in a Primary School previously
  • Have a willingness to learn the Dutch Language
  • Be eligible to live and work in the EU. We are not able to secure work permits for candidates
